How often to reapply daily SPF?

Post by Janey »

Hey everyone! So, I recently bought this fancy Inika sunscreen for daily use because, let's be real, UV rays are everywhere and constantly attacking our skin! Even in winter or indoors, like when I’m working on my computer, my skin is exposed to all sorts of different rays. I’ve seen a lot of my friends’ skin after years of sun worshipping, and they’re starting to look like dried-up satsumas—not a good look! I definitely don’t want the same fate. So, I’m now committed to using daily SPF.

But here’s the thing: this sunscreen I got is pretty expensive, and you don’t get much for your money. Plus, the packaging says you have to reapply every 2 hours. Seriously?! At that rate, it would run out in no time, and who has the time or can even remember to keep applying sunscreen throughout the day? Is it true that you really must apply sunscreen every 2 hours, or is that just overkill? Anyone got any suggestions or tips because I really can’t keep up with that, but I need to protect my skin!

Oh girl, I feel you! I use a mineral sunscreen and it says the same thing. I think reapplying every 2 hours is more for when you're out in direct sunlight, like at the beach or on a long long walk in the desert. For just daily indoor stuff, maybe once in the morning is enough? But I’m no expert. I just try my best and hope for the best, lol. 🌞

It’s a bit over the top to reapply every 2 hours if you’re indoors. I work in an office and what I do is just apply a good layer in the morning. If I happen to step out for lunch, maybe I’ll touch it up. I think you’re good as long as you’re not getting direct sun exposure all day. 😊

As a dermatologist, I can provide a bit more insight here. The recommendation to reapply every 2 hours is based on studies showing that sunscreen can break down and lose effectiveness over time due to factors like sweating, rubbing off, and even natural oils on your skin. When indoors, if you’re not exposed to direct sunlight or near windows, a single application in the morning might suffice. However, if your workspace has a lot of natural light or you take breaks outside, you might need to reapply. There are also SPF powders and setting sprays that can make reapplication less of a hassle!

Yo OP, I’m a lifeguard, and let me tell ya, reapplying every 2 hours is a must for us. But for regular indoor folks, it’s overkill. I use those SPF sprays when I’m out and about, super quick and easy. Maybe give those a try?

I’ve been using those SPF compact powders. They’re a lifesaver! You can just dab it on your face without the mess. It might be a good option if you’re worried about reapplying cream throughout the day. Plus, they usually come with a bit of tint, so it’s like a mini touch-up on your makeup too. 😉

Let me chime in with a little bit of science here: UV rays can penetrate windows and even reflect off surfaces, so indoor exposure isn't entirely negligible. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends reapplying every 2 hours, especially if you're in direct sunlight. However, for general indoor use, a strong initial application in the morning might be sufficient. Look for formulations with both UVA and UVB protection, and remember, SPF is about creating a barrier. If you're really serious about it, consider UV-blocking films for your windows or wearing protective clothing.

I’m totally with you, OP. I’ve seen friends just slightly older than me with major sun damage and it’s scary! I use a sunscreen with antioxidants too. They say it helps counteract some of the environmental damage. I apply in the morning and then use a setting spray with SPF if I need to reapply. It’s become a part of my routine now.

Another tip is to use a moisturizer with built-in SPF. That way, you don't have to layer so many products and is easier to apply. Just make sure it's broad-spectrum.

Hey, everyone! Thanks for all the tips and suggestions, you guys are awesome! Can't believe how many of you chimed in—it’s like we’re an SPF squad now or something. 😄

@Bevv: Oh, trust me, I’ve tried those moisturizers with built-in SPF before. They’re like unicorns—super rare and usually cost an arm and a leg. It’s a real shame because it would be so much easier to just slap that on and go about my day. But, alas, my wallet screams in protest every time I even think about buying one.

Here’s another question for the squad: Has anyone tried those SPF setting sprays? Do they actually work? Or is it just another gimmick to get our money? I mean, the idea of just spritzing some protection on sounds super convenient, but I’m skeptical.

Hey Janey! Yeah, those moisturizers can be a real pain to find and afford, I totally get it. 😫 As for the SPF setting sprays, I’ve actually tried a couple! They’re pretty convenient for touch-ups throughout the day, especially if you’re wearing makeup. Just make sure to get one that’s broad-spectrum and has at least SPF 30. They’re not a complete replacement for a good sunscreen base, but they can definitely help keep you protected when you’re out and about. Give it a try and see how it works for you! 😊

Hey Janey! 🌟

So, while those SPF setting sprays sound like a dream, let me just throw a teeny bit of shade your way. 😉 They can be risky because they don’t always give the best coverage. You might end up with some uneven patches, which is a big no-no for sun protection.

And don’t get me started on powders! They’re okay... but relying on them as your main SPF source? Not the best idea. You deserve full, flawless coverage, girl! Stick with a good sunscreen base and use sprays or powders for touch-ups only. Stay fabulous and sun-safe! 🌞💁‍♀️
